Free space optical data links using cat's eye modulating retro-reflectors

چکیده
Two kinds of systems will be described. The first is based on non-diffraction limited cat's eyes using telecentric lenses. These systems were used to implement a short-range optical link (3 meters) that was inserted into a standard 1553 protocol network. We will describe the optical design and the MQW photonic back-plane. We will also discuss a demonstration of a 4 node 1553 network using these devices.

Cat’s eye quantum well modulating retro-reflectors for free- space optical communications
Modulating retro-reflectors (MRR) couple passive optical retro-reflectors with electro-optic modulators to allow free-space optical communication with a laser and pointing/acquisition/tracking system required on only one end of the link. In operation a conventional free space optical communications terminal, the interrogator, is used on one end of the link to illuminate the MRR on the other end...

متن کاملInGaAs Multiple Quantum Well Modulating Retro-reflector for Free Space Optical Communications"
ABSTRACT Modulating retro-reflectors provide a means for free space optical communication without the need for a laser, telescope or pointer tracker on one end of the link. These systems work by coupling a retro-reflector with an electro-optic shutter. The modulating retro-reflector is then interrogated by a cw laser beam from a conventional optical communications system and returns a modulated...
متن کاملIncremental adaptive networks implemented by free space optical (FSO) communication
The aim of this paper is to fully analyze the effects of free space optical (FSO) communication links on the estimation performance of the adaptive incremental networks. The FSO links in this paper are described with two turbulence models namely the Log-normal and Gamma-Gamma distributions. In order to investigate the impact of these models we produced the link coefficients using these distribu...
متن کاملSimultaneous Optical and Laser Space Objects Tracking
The goal of the presented experiments is the development of new optical tracking techniques for space objects, namely space debris, based on simultaneous CCD and laser measurements: the CCD tracking of a laser illuminated object, the simultaneous CCD tracking and laser ranging and the laser time-tagging of the CCD tracking. The first two experiments can be performed on cooperative corner retro-...
